The Dutch Language

Spoken by around 24 million people worldwide in Aruba,  Belgium, Suriname and the Netherlands, Dutch is a West Germanic language. Sometimes referred to as the smallest world language, Dutch is mutually intelligible with daughter language, Afrikaans, although their spellings differ.

The Dutch vocabulary is, like that of English, vast, with approximately  186, 000 head words.  Again like English, Dutch has a plethora of loan words from Greek and Latin.

English loan words are added to the Dutch lexicon on a regular basis as the mass media and Internet in Holland  is dominated with English words, phrases and sayings.  Unlike many nations, Holland is quite happy with this influx and, in fact, Dutch synonyms for English words are often ignored and occasionally derided.

Dutch is written using the Latin alphabet and has a comparatively high proportion of double letters. This is due to the formation of compound words and also to the spelling devices for distinguishing the many vowel sounds in the Dutch language. Amusingly there exists a word with five consecutive doubled letters...'Voorraaddoos' meaning 'supply box'!
